Measuring AI's impact on
UK SME productivity.

The data is in. UK SMEs that adopt AI are outperforming those that don't — across productivity, revenue and operational efficiency. This research compiles the current evidence and makes the case for why the window for early-mover advantage is closing fast.

The state of play

Most UK SMEs are still
sitting on the sideline.

Despite the evidence, the majority of UK businesses have not yet meaningfully adopted AI. A 2026 British Chambers of Commerce survey found that while 54% of SMEs are now using AI in some form, 43% have no adoption plans whatsoever. The gap between early movers and laggards is growing — and it's increasingly showing up in financial results.

The University of St Andrews, drawing on the Department for Business and Trade's longitudinal small business survey, found AI adoption delivers productivity gains of between 27% and 133% for UK SMEs compared to non-adopters. These are not marginal improvements. They represent a structural competitive shift.

"SMEs already using AI report dramatically higher productivity expectations — 71 percentage points higher than those still planning to adopt. The gap between doing it and thinking about it is significant and growing."

The barriers

Why most SMEs
haven't started.

BCC research from September 2025 identified three primary barriers preventing UK SMEs from starting with AI. None of them are insurmountable.

Skills gaps (35%): Business owners and teams don't know how to evaluate, select or implement AI tools without external expertise
Cost concerns (30%): Uncertainty about upfront investment and unclear return — particularly acute for businesses with tight margins
ROI uncertainty (25%): 39% of business leaders can't identify where AI would actually help — what's often called "use case paralysis"
The SME gap: IBM found 72% of large enterprises report AI productivity gains versus only 55% of SMEs — the gap exists because large companies have implementation support that small businesses lack
